Default What happens when you run K-04's with the stock chip?

I like to be conservative and invest in reliability before power, but my approach might have backfired.

My car has the following airflow improvements:
- APR exhaust
- AWE downpipes
- 2.8 N/A heads
- K-04 turbos
- AWE intercoolers
- AWE S-flo filter

I am running a completely stock fuel system, including stock ECU programming. My thinking is that this is the safest way to run because it is stock boost. Now I am hearing that all of the airflow mods might be causing it to run too lean and thus too hot.

Is anyone familiar with running like this? Any suggestions for the safest way to increase fueling? I don't want to chip it and raise boost. I could change the FPR. Any other way to tweak fueling while leaving boost stock?

Thanks,
Karl

Default Do you have any symptoms that make you think there is a problem?

If you haven't already, have someone log it to get some real data about how it is running.

I ran stock fueling and ECU for 3-4 months with no problems, FWIW.

Default closed-loop operation should be OK after a while

i don't know if ME7 carries adapted fuel trims into open-loop. if it doesn't, then i believe you'd be running lean indeed.

Default You'll be fine. You might get spiking, which could cause limp mode

if that's the case, just throw an MBC in parallel to cap the boost (a search will reveal how to install it with pictures and everything).

Oh and FWIW ditch the S-flow if/when you get stage 3 fueling. Even AWE doesn't recommend using the S-flow with their stage 3 setup. Apparently the increased airflow causes it to collapse... or something to that effect.

I believe a guy named S4Poor on here is looking for one. So if you want to unload that S-flow shoot him an email.

Default Symptom = blown HG within 500 miles of replacing long block

The builder says he sees evidence of damage due to lean running.

I will definitely log EGT, O2, etc once it is back together

Default I figured between AFM, O2 sensors, EGT, etc I would be good

But if it doesn't carry over to open loop, AFM is the only one that helps. The question then is whether that should give enough info with no other trims.

Default BTW, to date, kept revs below 3500 because of new engine break in

So boost spike has not been a problem thus far.

I agree about the S-Flo. I know the AWE website says not to use it with their stage 3 because it runs too lean. My eventual goal is to go with AWE stage 3, but I want to see it run reliably before I crank up the boost.

Default Yea, just keep an eye on it.

Running on stock software you're not maxing out your stock fuel system, so the car should be able to compensate for the increased airflow and maintain the proper A/F.
