I typed this up for someone in an email, thought I would post it here. Everyone should have the factory repair manual, but in case you don't.

If test is not initiated or the display jumps from test on to test off slightly accelerate engine briefly, test will be repeated
EVAP OK should appear

This diagnostic is locked the first 230 seconds after engine is started
engin at idle
intake air temp less that 95 celcius (004 I believe)

test duration appox 60 seconds
should the diagnosis be repeated several times, open fuel filler cap each time to release pressure in tank
System OK should appear

please would you mind telling me what readiness used for? why do we do readiness code ? is it used when we erase the fault codes and don't come back so by doing readiness the fault code in a short time?

You force the readiness to be checked withing a short 20 minute time frame. Otherwise it will take however long it takes you to drive in all those specified ways, usually a couple days of driving and some highway driving if all you do is city driving.

you need readiness set to pass emissions.

It might help you pass emissions with broken cat, for example, as you can force the OBD system to signal readiness to emissions check equipment even though you car is not really ready. It takes several days of driving for readiness to be normally set during which any faulty emissions subsystem will have time to report problems and pop check engine light.

Another question along the lines of food, so you can do this and it will force readiness on the emissions stuff so you can run to the inspection station and pass emissions? If so, can someone please explain how to do this. I would be forever grateful.

Thanks,
Bill

Can you elaborate. I am in this situation with a faulty cat. I am due for inspection next month, and I was going to just reset the fault code to shut of the CEL. Should I also reset readiness code?

Thanks,
Ken

Hey Bayside

Nice post.

Some additional info. A link to a "quick reference" version for future "searchers". It's on the last page of the doc:

Cheers

The original post explains just how to do that. You will need the VAGCOM tool and software to force the car to run the tests.
