Default Abbreviation for million: M or MM? as in $10 million = $10M or $10MM

Or does it just depend on your assumed scale (i.e. for personal finance type stuff, M = thousand, and for corporate finance stuff where you're dealing with larger numbers, M = million)?

Default that's what I thought... there seems to be a lot of inconsistency, though

Default Do they get the M = 1000 from Roman numerals? If so, MM = 2000, not one million.
