1999 Audi A4 Transmission compatibility?
Hey,
Can someone tell me whether a transmission from a 1999 Audi A4 2.8L V6 would fit into a 2001 Audi A4 2.8L V6. What else would it fit in?
Thanks.

The 99 and 01 auto transmissions will physically interchange but the tranmission speed sensors G182
use different mehods of reading the transmission speeds--99 is induction, 01 is hall effect. My friend's
BMW shop subcontracted an engine change on a 99 A6 Avant using a low miles 2001 2.8l ATQ engine and FAS 5 speed automatic transmission with bad results. The 2001 FAS had to come out and be replaced by the correct 99 EKX transmssion. The 2001 ATQ 2.8l V6 could be used in place the 2.8l AHA 99 engine with only a few changes.

We tried lots of ways but to work the 2001 FAS ATX controller needs to talk to a 2001 engine controller for an 2.8l V6 ATQ engine. The 99 and 01 turbine speed sensors are not compatible and not interchangeable due to the redesign of the ATX turbine speed sensor to use a Hall effect sensor in place of the 99 model year induction sensors. My advice is to stay with the same year model components.

I just ran into this myself. Put '01 trans into my '99.. same symptoms - limp mode after a few seconds :/
My question is this: since I already have it installed, is there ANYTHING I can do to swap the 01's hall effect speed sensor over to the older g182 inductive sensor? I understand they have different mounting locations and therefore read off of different gears/equipment - I believe it was said in order to allow the hall sensor to work properly, you'd need the 01's tcm to communicate with an 01 ecm (which would be dbw, and require a LOT of modification to convert everything over to 01).. so my question is - what would it take to convert the transmission over to run the inductive type sensor? Since I have a dead trans I just pulled, I have any & all parts @my disposal IF the task is feasible.
Would it require only the bracket/mounting for the sensor, then splice it in/or change the internal harness.. Would changing out the whole valve-body/harness do any justice at all?.. or would it come down to changing out internal gears in the transmission from say magnetic to toothed?
-determined not to have to take on another transmission install!! (This is already my 2nd, first round replaced my junked trans with another junk unit -yay-) So if there's a way to make this work.. ugh, help??
