yea, I asked to look at it "objectively" and with his experience. He consulted on the China Syndrome

Default Thanks, don't need the pic, though, as I have a set sitting waiting to go on. Upgrading the brakes

from v1 to v2 is what led me to do the ball joint replacement (same area) that was discovered when I had my timing belt done a couple weeks ago.

I very much prefer the machining on the v2 block - see those nice large radii? I need to send ECS my calipers to have clearance machined in to clear the rotors.

I have a delicate discussion ahead of me to get my work done, but stress my displeasure with the v1 brackets as well...

Default Aluminum should not do that...

...a straight break suggests a possible defect in the extrusion that it was machined from.

Freakin' scary - glad you caught it.

Default Wow - nice catch. You're very fortunate to catch this defect - most would not -

very scary.

Default Here's what he replied...

Jeff:

Interesting...

It's a bit hard to tell from just pictures, but it looks like the material
was bad from the start. It appears that there was a lamination in the stock
material. The "crack" was most likely a lamination that was always there,
it just opened up when the calipers got hot. It's too perfectly straight to
be a stress crack. Laminations can form in hot rolled stock when there are
imperfections in the billet (raw material).

If you want to ensure the parts are good, an ultrasonic exam would find
these laminations before you could even see them. The manufacturer is
obviously not screening their material or does not have any NDE in their
specifications. An end user could have these tested themselves, but the
cost would not be practical I imagine.

Default I thought the same until I saw the last picture....

... and the fractures don't appear to line up. Can't see ECS using anything other than extruded bar which they most likely buy from a distributor.

Default Wouldn't it be pretty coincidental for both parts to have the cracks on the same plane if it is

due to a base material issue? Unless there are many "weak" layers in the thickness of the mount.
