IceLink Install in 2001 A6 - a few tips and some updates (VERY long with pics)

Thanks for the excellent write-up!
Tom, can you test this for me when you have a chance: Hold down the FWD or REW button on the steering wheel or radio while the iPod is in play. Does it scan the track instead of skipping tracks? I have used different remotes for the iPod and that seems to be a standard behavior (same if you do it right on the clickwheel on the iPod). Since the FWD/REW buttons are right on the steering wheel, it would make it a lot more convenient. Thanks!

This may help clear up some battery concerns.

Did the test...
...when I first installed the IceLink and just tried again with the new firmware. Same answer: No -- holding down the steering wheel control does not activate fast forward or reverse; it just goes to the next or previous track.
As I note in an update to my post, however, the new (2.15) firmware does let you FWD/REW in either Denison or or iPod UI modes...
- In the Denison UI mode, you just use the FWD/REW buttons on the head unit and they behave as you'd expect (this has always been the case).
- In the iPod UI mode (if you've upgraded to firmware 2.15), you need to activate the first numbered button (i.e., "1") and then the FWD/REW buttons will serve to scan forward/reverse. As I note in my post, activating other numbered buttons will cause the FWD/REW buttons to do other things like go to the next/previous playlist, album, or chapter.
Thanks for the link to the battery info. Looks like the effect is not as bad as I thought (certainly not the equivalenet of the NiCad "memory" effect), though constantly "topping off" your battery will speed up it's ultimate demise by a bit. The data on that page confirms my suspicion that setting the IceLink to only charge while playing is probably the best option.

Here's my I-Pod Interface. Only $55 and 5 min. install.

Transmits thru the radio on any unused frequency. May be a problem in large metro areas where all the frequencies are being used. Sound is good. Can be transferred from vehicle to another. Granted it is not as clean an install as yours.

I can't speak from experience, but...
my understanding is that the Symphony II head units still have an external CD changer port. If true, this is what you would connect the IceLink interface cable to. So, the install would be almost exactly as I describe. Activating the IceLink/iPod would require you to hit the "CDC" button twice to activate what the head unit thinks is the external changer (I think...).
You may want to STFA for Symphony II and IceLink to verfiy this...

Re: I can't speak from experience, but...
Cool. I looked before, but didn't spend a lot of time on it.
In the picture under step 11, where you are attaching the ground wire, which of those interfaces is for the cd changer? The vertical one?
I went out and pulled my radio out after I posted before and that vertical interface is there, but there is nothing plugged into it.

Symphony I and II probably have different port arrangements...
...because on the I, the vertical cable is NOT the CD changer port (as I remember it from four days ago!). The top (in the picture) horizontal one is the one that normally goes to the CD changer and is where the IceLink cable went.
Again, I'd do a search; I have to bet that there's somebody out there who did a Symphony II/IceLink integration and has talked about it.
G'luck!
