CAM Shaft Position sensor question (after search completed)
Hi all, may i first say thanks in advance for any replies...
My farther has a 2005 A6, 3.2... 80K miles...
My farther has a very similar problem to this...
https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho....php?t=2823874
How ever my questions are ...
1. How many Cam shaft position sensors are there on the car, i have heard 4??
2. If there are 4, how do you distinguish between the upper and lower on one side of the car, as my code reader only seems to refer to bank 1 or 2... giving the impression there are only two sensors?!?! if that makes any sense ;-)
3. If I check the below... Could I check what sensor gives the reading of -10 to +10, its not the cam shaft sensors is it?? My point is if a sensor is faulty could i give a force reading of the timing... (MY farther replaced the two upper cam shaft sensors with pattern parts, so i wonder if the pattern parts are faulty...
"You need to timing advance/retard...In VCDS-> Engine->Channel 93> Camshaft adjusters rotation angle should be between -10° to +10°, if more, you need to change 2 tensioners and 2 upper chains...
P.s. in MY 2005-2006 it's common problem on 3.2FSI engine and 2.4 BDW (Europe). In MY2007 the tensioners were redesigned."
4. Is it only the VAG/VCDS diagnostic systems which will report on timing?? For instance we have a few friendly mechanics local that have a variety of code reading systems including a Peugeot main dealer...
5. Finally... if we do need a VAG/VCDS code reader... dose anyone in kent have one??
Many thanks for this... sorry is i sound a little vague on any of the above... my first Audi ;-)
Kind Regards...

PS, the engine runs sweet/very well on occasion... so it dose not feel like a hardware/chain issue... more like a sensor...
Two upper cam shaft sensors replaced but with pattern parts, not from audi...
Error messages are still present... Simple reporting one camshaft sensor on each bank is faulty...

Your steps should be:
Swap sensor throwing the code with one that is not complaining.
Clear codes
Verify that there are no fault codes
Drive car
Check codes.
If the code keeps appearing in the same place, logic dictates that it is not the sensor. Next up would be the actuator solenoids, which can be tested in the same manner.
If I was working on this car, I'd take out the aftermarket sensors and start from scratch.
