It was an intermittant problem - FM reception OK, then sometimes not...
I read elsewhere that the likely cause was the amplifier. I pulled mine out and found that the circuit board is potted in a rubbery covering. The covering was cracked about 1" from the 3 connectors on the end. I tried peeling the coating off to see if the crack had compromised a solder joint or circuit board trace. The coating is very tough and I ended up ripping off several of the surface mount components before I gave up. Now my amplifier is trashed regardless if it was bad in the 1st place. But I suspect it was bad because of the crack I observed. I think the failure mode is that the rubber expands and contracts with temperature at a different rate than the PC board, this puts stress on the solder joints of the components which eventually fail and become intermittant.
