I gave the shade cover a forceful yank but it didn't even budge. Why is it that bugs land in that awkward place?

Either a can of compressed air (used to blast the dust from computer keyboards) or, next time you're at a gas station, give it a blast from the air hose used to refill tires.

A detailer showed me a trick she uses all the time: she has an assortment of
straws and tubes that she tapes to a vacuum nozzle. those little straws can go ANYWHERE, even between the seat and the hump and way into the vents.

If you have a shop vac, get a funnel for adding transmission fluid (small funnel with long skinny tube). Stick the hose in the funnel. Works great (assuming you turn vacuum on).
