You both can be right
Paul and others have had good results from a rebuilt torque converter, Gabor had hunting when he used his old valve body. It might be safe to generalize and say hunting can happen when the converter clutch doesn't respond the way a pre-2000 TCM expects, and the TCM gets into an endless search for the amount to converter clutch slip it was trying to achieve. (VAG-COM shows that under light throttle, the TCM is often holding the converter clutch somewhere between unlocked and fully locked, i.e. slipping the clutch.)
It's also possible that the ZF-unapproved fluid that Paul's now using would mask any degraded valve body responses by making the converter clutch less grabby, at the cost of faster converter clutch wear. The ZF-approved fluid is special for its friction modifiers and started being required when ZF introduced transmissions which have deliberately slipping converter clutches.

Nice shots of the clogged evap drains too . .
Did you decide to just remove those rubber pieces at the ends like Tozo did? Seems like it might save you from having to blow out the drains on a regular basis.
Happy to hear the tranny is doing better!

I am very lucky Gabor is my friend
Let's just say that I bartered some cash and some services with him.
I think if he did it for somebody else, taking their tranny out and rebuilding it and reinstalling it, it would be $3K.
