Default Gas? Do you smell gas?

Inside the cabin, I get a gasoline smell after the car has been sitting and idling for a while. It goes away once you start to drive. Probably a small leak somewhere under the hood, maybe the injection system? I'm trying to arrange some garage time so I can try to track it down. Working on a car outside at -40: ain't nobody got time for that.

Has anyone ever experienced something similar?

Check around injectors and the fuel line.

Check around your injectors. I'm just putting mine back together as I had a strong smell of fuel in the cabin. I opened the hood and could see it vapourizing off the engine. I pulled the injectors out and took them in to have them serviced. The problem was a bad o ring.

Default Garage Time

Getting some garage time lined up for January. Hopefully the car doesn't combust in the meantime.

Under the hood take the engine cover to the left of the Y-pipe off and look at the rubber line that connects to the hard line on the passenger side fuel rail in the rear. The hose is about 14" long and runs to the fire wall. The connection should be wet at the connection to the hard line. It is the fuel feed line for the fuel rail. P/N for 2.7T is 4B0-201-541-C. Be sure to check when you smell fuel because gas evaporates very quickly.

If it is the issue be sure to depressurize the line by pulling the fuel pump fuse and starting the car until it stalls and won't restart. Be careful still, there might be some pressure yet.

Best to take care of this quickly. You can find the line for about $85 these days.

Thanks for the input. Speaking from experience, I take it?

Only thing was, the leak started after it got really cold (below -30) I guess the line could have failed there, but I ordered some injector o-rings just in case it's those as well.

The theory behind the common failure is that it begins in cold weather since the ball-seat seal shrinks. Eventually it will leak in warm weather too.
