Audi's Image is "Sport and Luxury with Design"
It speaks to people that are young at heart and value the German Bauhaus Style of minimalism.
In Germany Audi has overtaken both BMW and Mercedes in sales and is the brand with the number one image according to recent surveys.
People like Audi because it is less pretentious than Mercedes and less aggressive than BMW. So they are considered friendly cars.
Audi still has to come to grips with sharing too many parts with VW, because if you buy a MB or BMW you get 100% genuine parts from that manufacturer. In my opinion VW parts don't make it worse since VW are great cars and the VW group is considered the automobile company with the highest level of technical competence worldwide. It's just an image thing to be associated with a less expensive brand.
