Fluids for 1996 A6 Quattro
i just bought a 1996 A6Q with auto trans...it didnt come with an owners manual. can i get some help on recommended transmission and diff fluids? ive seen GL-5 for front and rear diffs, but redline suggests gl-4 front and gl-5 rear. transmission fluid, i have found, should be g 052 162 a2/a1 compliant. is this true? is there a vw code for compatible fluid?

For the trans Valvoline Maxlife ATF has the VW audi number and works great in these cars. Its very reasonably priced and full synthetic. Definatly get a filter kit and drop the pan and change the fluid and filter.
Just use any synthetic 75w-90 oil for the diffs.

Filling the transmission is very tricky to get just right or it will make noises. The car must be level and running then filled right to the point it dribbles out.
If you do not have a lift or ramps on a level area it's hard to get exact.

changed it today. the pan was a bit squished from someone scraping the ground, i was able to push it back to shape with a soft hammer. other than that all went well. filled it while running, not much metal on the magnet in the pan. seems all good. changed the oil too..put in 15w-50 synthetic. i had to change the rear rotors and brakes since they were worn to the iron. was going to do the front brakes today too but ran out of time. the pads i got from the oreilly auto only have a wear sensor on one pad for one side, for both sides. is this correct? i looked under the car and it seemed like there should be a sensor on each side of the front brakes..that is, one on the drivers side and one on the passenger side. is this correct or is it really only one sensor for the whole front brake setup?

There should be one pad with a wear sensor on each side.
If the pads you bought only have one pad w/ a wear sesnor, return them, and purchase from a foreign car parts supplier or on-line from one of the suppliers, e.g., www.autohausaz.com.
