What's it like to own an Audi?
I have only ever owned Hondas which are super reliable and cheap to own regarding maintenance. Currently looking at a 2006 Avant 2.0l turbo quattro with S-line package. Asking price is $17,700 in excellent condition with 60K miles.
1) Is this a good price for this car?
2) How reliable are these cars?
3)What is the cost of ownership like?
I know Audis have a reputation for being great cars but I've also heard that they can be finicky and that labor and maintenance can be expensive. I'm excited about getting into one but am a bit anxious about getting into a bit of a money pit.

Something tells me that reliability and low cost of ownership are HIGH on your list of priorities. If so, stick with Asian and stay away from European cars It's that simple. Seriously.

I'm finding it impossible to find a manual transmission station wagon that has some guts behind it other than the Audi Avant (and Merc and BMW but not interested in those).
I understand European cars are not as reliable and affordable as Asian cars. I'm willing to make some sacrifice for a bit more luxury and fun but overall I want something I can rely on day to day and won't cost me an arm and a leg to keep maintained, even if more expensive than the Hondas I've had in the past. Can you offer a bit more perspective on what it's like to own a car like this?
I'm trying to get an idea of whether or not it's worth the compromise to get into one.

I personally think the cars are great, but I consider myself a "car guy" and will tolerate the financial pain involved with owning one of these things. We bought our A6 wagon 4 years ago. It had 17k miles on it and it carried the CPO protection. It's at nearly 90k now miles and has been a great car. However, I'd never get into one of these cars without the backing of CPO or the new car warranty. I personally handle all basic maintenance which saves a lot, but you need to have the tools, time and temperament to make that work.
If you seek a gas 'n' go experience, the European autos just aren't the ideal solution. I don't know what else I can say.
FWIW, I just chatted with my neighbor 2 mins ago. His '06 A6 needed a new BOSE amplifier. He said the bill was $1500. He was not happy.
