How many miles on a brand new S4

2004 S4 / 54 miles
2010 S4/ 8 miles
2014 S4 / 36 miles.
The last two were ordered cars and I was told that was what came at delivery, The 2004 was at the port when I did the deal and delivered one day before I took possession and there was a decent snow storm. Not thinking anyone in their right minds would take the car out for a joy ride in snow with summer tires.

Should have clarified. Mine was factory ordered. Not sure where those 17 miles came from. The explanation that the car is driven from the truck to the port, then from the boat to the truck is a bit far fetched. That accounts for maybe .5 miles. Add in a quick jaunt by somebody at the factory, maybe that's the other 15?

What I don't understand is the 50-70 people are seeing on cars that are dealer-to-dealer transfer... those should be put on a flatbed, not driven.

I have no thoughts that anyone at the dealership took any of my S4s for a joy ride. What happens at the ports or at the factory is unknown to me. BUT I saw a "How its Made" TV program about the R8. There is a factory test track and they did drive some of the R8s through a city circuit. I believe that Audi takes some of the cars on these circuits on a regular basis.

73 miles is nothing!
A few years back, I wanted to buy a RX8 with the specs I want. My dealer said they could transfer one from another dealer that was 200 miles away, but may have to spend for a truck to transport and it could take a few days. But my dealer said that someone from the other dealer could drive it and I could have it in less than 24 hours. I wanted the car immediately, so they had someone drive it 200 miles. I got the car I wanted to the last specs. That time the RX8 was a hot car, since it just came out of the X-men 2 movie and you could rev it up to 8500-9000 RPM. 200 miles - It's no big deal.
Even 4,000 miles seem nothing!
I just got a slightly used allroad with 4,000 miles with a $13,000 discount.
Everything looked, felt, drove brand new.
For most German cars, anything under 5,000 feels brand new.

Thanks to the forum, I've decided to purchase a new S4. I located the perfect one in the color I want with the features I want at my local dealer, but it has 73 miles on it. The dealer tells me it's due to dealer to dealer transfer which I've heard of, but since this is the first time I've ever purchased a new car, I didn't know if that was normal or not. I've read that anything under 100 is reasonable. I'm sure there's a wide range but I just wanted to make sure this is indeed normal...maybe not common...but normal?

Not if you do not want to spend $350-$450 for the truck !
If you want to spend $0, and the dealer is 50-70 miles away, someone could just drive it and save you the trucking cost.
Heck, when I buy a new Audi, my dealer (who knows me) even offered to deliver/drive the car to my home if I wanted to. And my house is about 40 miles away.

I'd be very hesitant about some Joe mechanic driving the car that far of a distance.
