Default Overheating - cause temp sensor to go bad?

So my D2 got a little hot over the weekend, not really in the red but up there. The lower radiator hose came off and all the coolant came out - see my other post. Ambient temps were around 25f so no damage was done.

I have taken the car into have the coolant flushed and now they are telling me that the temp sensor has been fried (fault code) by the overheating? Is is correct ?

If can someone point me to it's location and a aftermarket part. They Want $190 to replace it - Slipstream Auto in Boulder.

Hey Thabo,
If the coolant temp sensor is bad, don't pay $190 to have them replace it, that's robbery. I honestly don't know if only mildly overheating would destroy the sensor but It's only $12.95 on europaparts.com. At that price you can afford to replace it every time you do a tune up lol. Here's the location, the pic is at the back left of the motor, if you are looking at the front of the car:

Very easy to replace as a DIY.
As in the photos above it is easily accessible under the intake tube from the right side of the car.
Make sure you get a new o-ring and make sure the old one comes out!

Its even cheap as a genuine part $50 odd down here, so probably $30 or less in the US

Got the car back and no check engine light on at all so not sure why they said it was a bad sensor. It's logical that the sensor will show an overheating fault when the car is on the verge of overheating .... oh well.

Boulder, CO? How far are you from Wheatridge? I've gone to 3zero3 Motorsports twice and were the best experiences I've ever had. The guy that worked on my car 2 years before remembered me the minute I called the 2nd time ("Oh right, the silver S8"). I was only there for an alignment the first time. I was impressed; they even did the entire alignment while I waited and watched, on a Saturday no less (the customer area is divided by glass from the service area and they welcome you back to show you exactly what they're doing...they showed me my leaking oil cooler pipe and seeping oil pan and gave me DIY tips).

Those sensors fail all the time. Audi had a major recall on them and if you had it replaced before and had the receipt, they reimbursed you for it.
