The reason it works for the Auto Union is because
the car's front body mass was mostly vertical. So a vertical grill (ie: whale mouth) matched perfectly.
Today's cars have a front body mass that is horizontal (They've been that way since the mid-40's), so having a vertical grill looks really out-of-place and clashes with the other lines of the car. Forcing a design, just for the sake of forcing a design, is a bad idea, IMO.
I've been an Audi fanatic for over 25 years. Right when I think the fish mouth is growing on me I step back, clear my mind, and ask myself, "If I had never seen an Audi before or knew nothing about Audis, is that a design I would be attracted to." The answer is always "no".
