I'm looking at getting one and just wondering how they work, as well as if there is any possible danger in baking the oil or damaging the engine in any way?

http://www.padheaters.com</a

I heard Audi recalled theirs...
as sometimes they did not stick right and then dropped onto the platic plate and whoila - FIRE. As afretes noted, they do make them for some of the VW's thus you might be able to find one from a VW dealer for cheap.

yes
for the past 3 years. They were recalled because ppl did not know how to install them.
Auto Allemagne did mine, I think you need to use epoxy, but I really forget what it is. Also the surface has to be ultra clean...
Its worth getting for those minus 40 days.... Also really saves the wear and tear on start up in the winter if you don't garage you're ride.

do you live somewhere super cold?
otherwise living in the gta...i don't see why you'd need one

I live out in Alberta and I'd say we generally get some colder weeks than the GTA....
Just want to try and relieve some stress on the engine. It has never not started due to cold but just wanted to give it a little extra 'help' on those cold mornings.

Huh? Why would anyone need these South of 60?
Use synthetic oil and you don't need to heat the engine at all until it gets below minus 40. Even then it will be the volatility of the fuel that becomes the issue rather than cranking speed. One of my cars no longer has ablock heater even as cold starting is just not an issue with synthetic oil.
Frankly, a battery warmer is a much better plan than any attempt to heat the oil in the sump.
Ever tried pouring Mobil 1 at minus 30? You'll be surprised at how thin it looks.
