Default S8 transmission recode - Success! :-)

Just found the time to play around with a little transmission coding today. I wanted to see if I could get a transmission that didn't shift in manual, like they used to be.

I wanted to try Mark'sA8L suggested coding of 00032 or 00022, but my car didn't accept any of these.

I then tried 00131, which it accepted.

And behold, it now behaved just like my old A8 sport! :-)
- No upshifts at redline, just hits the limiter (even in 1st).
- No downshifts at kickdown
- Only automatic downshift at very low rpm, actual rpm depending on gear. 5th at ~1000, 4th at ~900

The behaviour is the same if manual mode is selected by tip buttons or by gear selector. No difference between "D" and "S" mode in this respect either, but "Manual S" mode seems quicker than "Manual D", like before. Selector in tiptronic gate acts just like "Manual S" when it comes to shifting time.

Just for the fun of it, I recoded to 00121 also. Didn't notice any difference from 00131, but it came four inches of snow today, so road testing was somewhat limited by slow non-quattro vehicles.

The soft code in my car was 00101 before I changed anything. After googling a bit, I believe this means:
xx1xx: DSP engaged
xxx0x: New model tiptronic shift strategy
xxxx1: Region: Rest of world, quattro

In other words, changing the xxxYx toggles between old and new "tiptronic shift strategy"
xxx0x and xxx1x is the new behaviour (semi-automatic tip mode)
xxx2x and xxx3x is the old behavior (manual tip mode)

This link confirms that this is the case for the A4:

The advise for xxxx2 is for USA cars. Rest of world, like yours, need xxxx1 (quattro only)

Do you know what the difference is? Could a US car be coded 00131?

Just to add to this old thread, I tried a Tranny recode on my '98 S8. Stock coding is also 00101. It would not take 121, 131, 122, 132, even tried all them with a leading 1 (ie 01101) based on a tip elsewhere.

The only code that would stick was 00111, which is another of the "new shift strategy" type. Gave it a quick drive and the Thump when slowing to a stop then punching the accelerator was nearly eliminated. Also holds gears longer. Perhaps this is a sports mode?

Anyone know the actual difference between 00121 and 00131? I've been wanting to try something different on my '02 S8. I'm assuming my coding is 00101 currently. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Or maybe even 00111?

Codes ending in "1" are for Euro models, as far as I know...US codes end in "2". Look down at the codes for 00-03 A8's here >>

http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articl...nsmission.html

They should be the same as your S8 code choices but with a 1 added as the 2nd digit. Your stock code is probably either 01002 or 01012. Changing to 01032 will give you sport coding (not "sport mode", like shifter) and full control of 1st gear in tip.

Read over this thread, too...another code (00132?) might give you tip-on-demand at the wheel without shifter positioned...maybe(?) >>>>

http://forums.quattroworld.com/a8/msgs/80892.phtml

My '01 A8 is set to 00032, which gives me sport coding and full control of 1st gear in tip...hold 1st to redline (or user shift) and can be downshifted to 1st at any speed under it's redline, regardless of throttle input...HUGE difference over stock coding...awakens a V8 monster at lower speeds (up to 40mph in an A8...less, of course, with S8 gearing).
