Yes, I use the iTouch 4th gen with the red cable and have album art and can play video when standing still (no VAG-com so no video in motion.)
Nothing special had to be done other than plug it in

You can find some reverse-engineered, Chinese knock-offs on eBay but buyer beware - there are reports of some not working properly. There's an Apple licensed chip in the Audi cable necessary for it to communicate properly.

I would like to add that the behavior is the same with current Android devices. I have version 4.0(Ice Cream Sandwich) on my Droid Bionic.

Jose, according to Audi, all iPod Touch models should work with the red cable - they use the same guts as iPhones which we know will work. What MMI system version did you have at the time you tried it? You would have needed 0467 or later. Also, sometimes you have to reboot the IOS device when you switch to a different cable.

iPod Touch 2G does video and artwork via Red Grommet cable. Appreciate that I am running EU rather than NA version of MMI so there may be a difference there. Can also confirm that the iPhone 5 does show artwork via the Apple 30pin to 8pin adaptor but will not play video
