well i purchased a new cable and that didn't work, so i thought i would live dangerously and order a portable harddrive and try that.
it works great! havent had any issues and i have 100 gigs of music on it...i guess the jump drive just wasnt compatible with the ami system for whatever reason, but now my wife uses it in here subaru.
thanks guys!

FWIW, all USB 3.0 devices are backward compatible with 2.0 devices, albeit limited to 2.0 speeds. The only 3.0 connector difference is the addition of two extra pins which are ignored when used with 2.0 devices. While you might be able to save a few bucks with an older USB 2.0 drive, either version should work fine with the AMI>USB 2.0 cable.

But for anyone in the future, USB 2.0 will obviously be less available if at all so we should see how the work!
Thanks all
