Default Wire going to compressor clutch is broken

<img src="http://home.earthlink.net/~andrewaranda/audi/accessory%20belt%20routing.gif">
The compressor is #11 is this diagram. There is one wire going to it which delivers battery voltage to the clutch solenoid. Make sure it is intact.
On my car it popped out of its clip and one of the belts rubbed through it. Fixed with soldering iron and heat shrink.

Default Refrigerant pressure is too high or too low

Have a shop check your refrigerant pressure.

Default Outside temp sensor is faulty

If the climate control thinks it is below freezing outside, it won't allow the compressor to turn on.
If your outside temp display reads -59F or some other crazy value, this is most likely your problem.
The outside temp sensor is located in the lower middle grille opening of the front bumper. Make sure the sensor isn't damaged and that the wire harness going to it is connected and not damaged.

Default Compressor belt is slipping

Normally the speed of the compressor is a fixed multiple of the engine speed. If the compressor speed deviates from this value by a certain amount, the climate control assumes that the belt is slipping and will turn off the compressor.
Check your belt tension. Here's a pic of the compressor belt tensioner (from Andy_TN's timing belt tech article)
