Default HOPING I DID NOT DO HARM TO MY AUDI

I bought my wife an 2011 Audi A4 . Briliant red with a black interior. Our 49th anniversary present from me to her. She was in love with it in January and still is. The only thing I did was have the windows tinted. There has been so much to learn from this Foruum. When I saw the the one about leaving the oil in that comes from the factory for proper break in. My heart skipped a beat. I have always had American cars. Unill she saw this Audi. I always dumped the oil at 500 miles to get rid of the grinding dust and chips. However some one posted that there is a break in oil that should be left in to finish the cylinder break in. That you want the dust and chips to finish the process. So you guessed it-- I dumped the oil at 700 miles and put in castrol full synthetic 10w 40 with the VW 50200 qualification.
2 questions. 1.-- Did I do the engine harm and will the cylinder walls and rings syill break in. Because the way she drives. She will only have about 3000 miles on it when its time for her free oil change. 5000 miles or 1 year. And why do the chrome tips have black soot on them every time she drives it. I have to constantly wipe them with a wet rag.The dealer said its because there is no weep hole in the muffler system as American cars have. And that it is moisture. I dont know. There is a picture of the car in my garage. Thanks fellows, Dukester1

What dust and chips?

There's no Castrol product meeting 10W40 that meets 502.00 in the USA.

Duke, you didn't "harm" the engine, but may have slowed the break-in process. It's best to follow the engine mfr's guidelines on the 1st service. Many end up with cars that consume serious oil. Good luck! and take it out for a hard drive every now and then to assist the ring break-in process.

is it true that Audi puts in a special break in oil. I would think it would just be oil.

I suspect you're quite mistaken about this. These as old wives tales from 30 yrs. ago or you've spent way too much time reading the nonsense on BITOG.
