Default S tronic +/-

Hi, how do you guys drive your s tronic transmission? im new to the paddle shift,

1. Do i leave it in D mode and use the paddle +/- shift anytime?
2.At what rpm should i up shift?
3.(sounds dumb) anytime i down shift a gear do i need to step on the brakes?
4.heard people use Sport mode most of the time than D mode does it kills the engine? can you use this mode with the paddles too?

Sorry for the newbie question,

Tia

You can pretty use the paddles anytime. Upshift where you like, short of redline but not until the drop in rpms does not lug the engine just like a manual. Keep revs no lower than 1500-1200 after shift. No need to step on brakes to downshift. Be mindful of how the increase in revs may lead to a lurch of engine braking. Once you tap the paddles it goes into sport mode.

Moving the center gear shift to the right places you in manual mode, where it will stay the only unless you redline or go low enough that the engine would die. Otherwise you can use the paddles when the gear shift is in the left position, but it reverts back to automatic mode at some prescribed lag time from the last shift you make. I generally use the paddles when I've put it in manual mode the exception being when I want to downshift quickly.

As soon as I start my car I shift it to dynamic. Once the car is at operating temperature I shift it to full manual and use the paddles. So I drive mine in manual/dynamic 96% of the time. No need to apply the brakes when downshifting. I am a very aggressive driver. In D even dynamic the tranny shifts way too early for my liking. My GTI has a sport setting and is much better IMO especially when slowing for a bend. Very aggressive. That car has been flawless with 169,000 km on the DSG driven from day one like I stole it.

I leave it in Auto (vs Dynamic or Comfort), though sometimes switch it to Individual. But, like seinsmeld13, I switch it to the manual gate for most driving (once I'm out of my subdivision). I wouldn't say I'm an overly aggressive driver, but I do like a responsive car!

What about shifting into S? Is that like shifting in to sport mode in a BMW and Infiniti?
