I've successfully copied many MP3 & M4A files to an external 2.5" USB HD, and it is working properly with respect to the file structure and the playlists I've created. However, I am having a problem with trying to shuffle what is selected.

First, the file structure looks like this:

Genres... with the M3U playlists in the root

(1) If I choose to shuffle all tracks in an album, it will instead choose to shuffle all tracks on the HD

(2) If I choose to shuffle all tracks in a playlist, it will either (I don't know which) ... (a) shuffle all tracks on the HD, or (b) shuffle all tracks in all the playlists. It's probably (a).

With respect to an external HD or the SD, has anyone found a solution for what I'd like "shuffle" to do??

I would actually have use for your nr (1) problem
I have a 2014 A4 with "Navigation plus", 3G+, system.
When playing from SD-card, the "Mix" function only offers the choice to play from one folder. (It seems that this is what you would like.)
The setting for folder mode seems mandatory in Mix mode when playing from SD.

From the HDD (jukebox) I'm allowed to choose between folder level or all songs. My user's manual also makes a distinction in this respect between jukebox, CD-player and SD-card.

One difference I notice is that my media only contains one folder level: album_x, album_y ...
I don't use playlists and I don't have AMI.
