Great illustrations Dave, thanks - here's what my temp fix was looking like - hah
Was driving and the coolant light comes on - seemed odd so I start heading for the house
1 minutes later the Check Engine light comes on - now I'm thinking dammmit Audi is about to explode
Was only 1 mile from house by then, so I coasted to the house - hope she's okay
Just going to wait and call the stealership Monday for some cheap NEW parts

Just thought everyone would like to know, it was not my HG, the head was cracked.
So if you ever have coolant leaking and not into the combustion chamber, it could be from a cracked head. In the middle of the reapair right now, whcih has evolved into loooking at the crank & rod bearings.
Fun, fun, fun.

Actually I am the A title holder, all 192K miles were mine and never had an overheat situation, ever.
Going to be redoing the bottom end, so I will get a chance to check that as well.
The coolant leak wasn't huge, but was getting worse over time. Started at about 1/2 coolant tank per month, was that way for a few months and then got worse just before I took the car out of service and started the work.

This is what a good Tee and coolant sensor, etc. look like:

After I found chocolate milk for oil I had decided to pull the head hoping it was a failed head gasket.
When I saw the head gasket lookimg OK, I was worried - basically I had three possible areas of failure:
1. Cracked Head
2. Cracked block
3. Messed up Turbo
So when I took the head to the machine shop, they pressure tested it and found the cracks near the spark plug holes. So a machine shop found it after I pulled the head off the car.
