4.2 manual gear box info please
Guys, can anyone tell me if the Audi 012/Porsche 2.5 Boxster gear box can be made to fit the 4.2 V8?
I've read conflicting reports about the gear box 'bolting right up'.
I want to use the engine/gear box in a mid engined car.
Original plan was to use the Boxster drive train, but the engine is toast, so looking for non-Chevy/Ford small block alternatives to use with the Boxster gear box...
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
K9

I can only give anectodal evidence.
Early 4.2 (PFI) engines seem to 'bolt right up' to the 01A (5spd) and 01E (6spd) gearboxes following a B5 Quattro V8 conversion done by a bloke called Siena a few years ago (don't know if was posted on this forum, but it did the rounds).
He initially didn't change his gearbox from the 01A 5spd of the 12V V6 donor car he used for the conversion and the S8 engine he used seemed to mount without any real issues.
AFAIK the 012 has the same mount as the 01A (FWD vs AWD, essentially the same gearbox, though there were some ratio options depending on application).
So anecdotally it appears that 90's through to mid 2000's Audi gearboxes are universally compatible to most Audi engines of the same period.
I do know the 'compact' V8 of the B6 S4 uses a unique bell housing requiring a matched 01E or Auto, can't remember why this was so, probably something to do with its timing chain at the rear.

Thanks Marty. My intention is to use the 4.2 and wiring harness etc from a late 90's A8, and utilise the Boxster gearbox. I'll check serial numbers of the existing box etc to make sure it's equivalent to an Audi 'box. At worst I'll have an A8 to break for parts, an Audi 5 speed 'box to find, and a Boxster gear box to sell!
Thank you,
K9
