away from my gf's house where we were going .. damn pos.
i heard it first time this morning buzzing on and off .. when we got near our destination the thing was buzzing like crazy ..and eventually stopped . i felt it dying @ WOT a few miles before its last breath .
now i don't know if should get a relay too with the pump ...

Yes....
The fuel pump places a more heavier and heavier load on the relays over time, as the fuelpump wears. The relay handles a good amount of DC amperage for years, and is exposed to the elements, as they are not hermetically sealed.
Some contain the rev-limiter electronics, depending on year & model of Audi/VW.
My 86' Coupe would eat a FP relay about every 3 years. So I carried a spare where ever I went.

what were the symptoms ?
the pump started buzzing a little in the morning , and after driving 1 hour got really loud (heard it when i was sitting in traffic near home) . now it would only run for 1-2 minutes before changing the tone and get really loud again ..and probably stop eventually.

pump relay failures are almost 3 times as common as pump failures...
Thats why repair shops like Champagne keep 3 new relays sitting around on the shelf compared to only 1 fuel pump.
Their computer shows the relay is 2.7 times more likely to fail than the pump based on 15 year history.
3 weeks ago I wasnt so lucky. It was my pump that failed. But I also bought/replaced the relay at the same time even tho my old one was good. Least now I have a "known-good" back-up relay to hedge my 2.7:1 failure rate.
