Default Transmission in emergency mode / Tip-tronic issue.

Hey,

This is my first post over here. I have not managed to find a solution for D3 series A8 yet. I have a 4.2 2003 A8.

My gearbox has been running in emergency mode since the time I bought it. (see picture below). Nothing on the dash changes, as i go through different gears. It doesn't change to numbers either, as i switch to tip-tronic.

I thought it was due to tiptronic not working. Nothing happens as I push + or -, nor if i put the shifter into tip-tronic mode in the first place. I scanned quite a few forums, and the most common issue for the tiptronic not working was that the magnet under the circuitboard around the shifter had fallen away.

Since I sent the center console into repairshop for 1 of the buttons to be fixed, it was a good chance for me to look at the magnet.

It actually is totally different from the tiptronic magnets i've seen on pictures so far. Usually it's a square-shaped one, and goes on top of the small metal square part which I also have in my picture. My magnet is cilinder shaped and you can see it laying on it's side there. It does not fit under the circuitboard on top of the square metal part.

If i switch between D,R,N,S or P, the letters or the led lights next to the shifter light up. As i put the shifter into tiptronic, the car drives just as it was in D and non of the lights are brighter than the other ones.

As the shifter is in D, D lights up

In tip-tronic mode, none of the lights are brighter.

Now I am not sure if the magnet of a 2003 A8 should be where it is in my picture and that way?
Secondly, does tip-tronic even work if the gearbox is running in emergency mode?

And if you have any ideas for fixes, feel free to let me know. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Welcome to the Board!

Starting with your pictures, they are too small.

You should perform VCDS or VAS scan. That should help to see what's going on.

If anything is wrong with shifting mechanism they are quite cheap used and rarely broken. Replacing would be easier than fixing it.

Thank you for the reply.

I'm sorry for the pictures...I assumed it would direct to a bigger image, but I guess it does not. Will update them.

I got such an error from the diagnostics today:
18161 - Tiptronic Switch (F189)- Implausible Signal : P1753

As i remove the error code from the memory, the gearbox isn't in the emergency mode anymore, until it runs for a while or I switch it into D, and then it's back in emergency mode.
