Default Oil Temperature Sensor LOCATION - 99 2.8L

Does anyone have a good image of the oil temperature sensor location for a 1999 A6 2.8L?

My gauge doesn't move and fixing this is the next project I want to entertain. I have the Bentely Service manual but it doesn't give a very good description of where this is located. All I know is that is half way up the front of the engine of the drivers side. Again, pictures would be very nice...

Thank you.

Sensor rarely fails. Have you done any diagnosis with VAG-COM?

It is on front of engine, immediately to the right of crankshaft, between crankshaft and AC pulleys, just below the belt tensioner and therefore might be hard to spot when looking from above.

Anyway, use http://www.vagcat.com/epc/ (register) to see diagrams.

Thanks.

I don't have the VAG-COM software at the moment so I haven't diagnosed. Anyone in Pullman, WA/Moscow, ID area with VAG-COM?

I'll give you a run down of the symptoms: When the car is turned on I can see the oil temperature gauge move slightly. But is stuck of the most left position (indicating the coldest oil temp). A couple of weeks ago I drove it 300 miles including climbing over a mountain pass and the oil temp gauge never moved. I'm positive the oil was hotter than the gauge indicated.

I finally purchased VAGCOM. Hooked it up to the car and tried to see if the software would give me a temperature reading for the oil. I couldn't get a reading at all, essentially it said 0.0.

Are there any additional ways to test the oil temp sender with VAGCOM?

Does anyone know the wire route to the ECU?

Any input is appreciated.

I have this EXACT issue ..I would imagine grounding the sender wire would peg the guage .. or defect it to maximum when disconnected ... the dissapointing part is I just did a timing belt after starting the car and it was probably right htere in front of me for testing doh !!!!

update,,,, My 2000 for sure has the oil temp built into the oil level sender and must be replaced with OE unit ( Hella) . Others WILL NOT WORK >..
here is a link to the site with the cheapest one I found.. will update again after my next oil change ..

Default Similar issue

I have a 2001 2.7t and had a similar issue. The oil sensor light would go on and off and the temp gauge would stop working when the sensor light went on. i replaced it with a sensor made by Meyle, the sensor light stayed off but now the oil temp gauge doesnt work. I plan on buying the oem part now. I know this post is long after the original, but for anyone considering the cheaper replacement oil level sender... DONT DO IT! buy oem.
