Default What happens if you overfill your oil tank?

I took my car to the dealer today and got the car topped off with some conventional oil. He looked at the dipstick and said that it needs about 1/2 a quart. He poured and I checked it 10 minutes later. It was now over the max line by 2-3 centimeters. Is this bad for the car? Should I take it back to the dealership and have them take some oil out?

Yes! Over filling the engine can cause oil to be carried over into the induction system, which can cause damage to the catalyst.

It can also cause increased detonation, but one would hope the knock detection system can cope with that.

Should I get the oil out as soon as possible? How would I do this?

Default Sure ,no harm if not start the engine. But I am not sure how.....

long can you drive without harm to engine. I think it would be better to call the dealer.Because it is an important situation. No more help. Sorry.

I believe also the crank could dip too far into the oil and actually causing it to foam and therefore likening the chance of air (dry spots) being pumped throught the engine. I could be completely wrong but, that is what I think I remember from auto-shop class in high school.

Default Are you sure you mean "2-3 centimeters?" Thats 3/4" to 1 1/4" past the full mark!?!

Or between 4 & 5 quarts past full. 2-3 millimeters isnt gonna hurt much but 2-3 centimeters past the full mark could be devastating... hydro-lock the engine and like Andy said ruin the catalytic converter.
