Default Misfires

As previously discussed, I had all six coil packs replaced due to all six misfies, supposedly. Engine misfired again yesterday, so there must have been something else wrong. Would a cam position sensor cause a mis fire? It only seems to happen when i am driving hard. Could it be as simple as some bad plugs or anything? I have 112k on the car now.

Default did you try the spark plugs in the first place?

i would start there, cheap enough to do and not too hard

No. When I took it in the car was barely driving. When they replaced the coils, it seemed to be fixed. Now about 3k miles later, here we go again.

Default Lot's of things

But first I would look for codes before you do anything else. See if it tells you anything.

Some common misfire culprits:

Plugs - and a lot of oil around the outside of them
Wires
Coils
Knock sensors
Engine grounds
POS

Don't forget coolant temp sensor.

Default Usually you see it run really rich along with that

When monitoring mine I see ir run real rich. Then when the intake air sensor flips it smooths out dramatically. A bit later when the coolant temp trips, the mileage gets a lot better too.

Default Agreed. But any time there are unexplained misfires with no code for anything else...

...I start with the coolant temp sensor. Cheap, easy, known for failure, causes havoc without throwing codes.

Default Don't forget the Ignition Control Modules - two solid state devices on top of the airbox. You can

usually swap them and watch the misfires switch cylinders, if you have VAG-COM and can see individual cylinder misfires.
