Default 4.2 and FWD 5 speed

I am contemplating swapping a 4.2 V8 into my Lotus Europa and need some advice. I have a rebuilt 5 speed FWD tranny from a GT coupe and need info on mating the V8 to it. Does the 4.2 accept a manual clutch and flywheel if it originally had an automatic? Or do I need to find a 5 speed equipped 4.2? I am new to the Audi engine world, but I have been reading everything I can and haven't really found this exact info. Thanks in advance.

Lots of guys do manual conversions on us-spec 4.2's. There are a few companies that sell starters and flywheels designed for the type of conversion you are doing, do a search for rs6 manual conversion, or just 4.2 conversion!

im not sure. im also new. i have looked at some post and it seems that you can mate the 2.8 Manual Gearbox to the 4.2 via modyfying the bell houseing abit.

On many websites i have read that when "swoping to the 4.2 engine the gearbox is the least of your worries".

So is this true?
Can the V8 Be bolted to ANY V6 audi gearbox? If so which is the Preferred V6 gearbox?

The V6 012 / 01A 5-speed manual bolts to the 4,2 V8 32 / 40V with no modifications required.

It will also bolt to the older 093 5-speed manual from a type 81 / 85 Coupe GT.

You don't state which V8 you're referring to. But I would presume it's the 077 series 32/40V motor.

Either will accept a manual flywheel.

The 32V crank has 10-bolt fitment, so will require an OEM European flywheel (which is what I purchased) and matching clutch.

The 40V crank has 8-bolt fitment, so you can simply bolt on a flywheel from a 2,8 30V engine. If you're set on using the Coupe GT 093 5-speed manual, you'll need to mix clutch components. The V6 friction disc splines will only match the input shaft of an 012 / 01A 5-speed, or 01E 5-speed.

To match the 093 gearbox shaft, you'll need to use the friction disc of an Ur quattro turbo 10V. It's a 240mm item, the pressure plate needs to be the one from the 2,8 30V motor - again, 240mm.

Release bearing must be the unit for the Coupe GT.

Bear in mind, the 093 gearbox has quite a long shaft, so you'll need to look into a spigot bearing solution. You'll need to get one pressed into the crank boss. There's a steel bush in there that supports the torque converter, which has to be removed if running an 093.

My advice would be to run the 012 / 01A 5-speed from the B3/4 Audi 80/90 or B5 Audi A4. It's a better trans, the 093 is not that robust to handle V8 torque. The input shaft will also work perfectly in the flywheel-located spigot bearing, and the steel boss in the end of the crank can remain in place.

You can also use the 240mm Audi A4 B5 2,8 30V clutch complete, without mixing.

Default Sorry it's an old thread, but help please...

Guys, trying to research this swap...

be patient with me pls...

I was originally intending to use a Porsche Boxster drive train in a mid engine project. I bought a salvage Boxster for cheap, but now it seems the engine is toast. It's a 1998 Boxster 2.5 5 speed. I have read that the 5 speed Boxster manual is essentially an Audi 012 unit. That being the case, if I understand correctly, that means that my Boxster 5 speed will fit a 4.2 Audi (as in A8) engine. Is this correct?, if so, I understand that the rest of this thread states that it doesn't matter if the V8 was originally an auto or a manual...

If all this is correct, then that salvage S8 is looking attractive for my project...

Thanks guys,

K9
