Default 2002 A6 2.7T - Catalysts & O2 sensors

What is involved in replacing these units?

Is there any good option for aftermarket parts?

Thanks,
Warren

What I'm looking for is to understand the scope of the work required to change the cats. I have been told the engine needs to come out? Is this true?

Looking at another thread on this subject today, it seems that the problem I'm having may be simpler and just require new O2 sensors. The shop that told me I needed new cats didn't tell me the codes, and I didn't think to ask. I guess I'll see if they kept that info on file. They've been working on my car since it left the factory warranty about 20k miles ago. I will not be happy if they told me I need cats if all I really need is sensors. For now, they reset the check engine light and I am waiting to see if it comes on again. Quite a lot of driving since, and no light.

What motor do you have? On my 4.2, I was able to remove both down pipes from underneath the car. Maybe the turbo cars are different.

Not that i'm aware of. On my S6 there are 4 cats, and all are accessible from below. None are welded. All, of course, are rusted. The issue is cost. Most aftermarket cats are inferior in both operation, durability and fit. 4D4 prob has more experience than the rest of us combined.
