Default 80-90 psi oil pressure a bad thing?

i searched and i couldnt really find anything helpful other then low oil pressure problems and that 72 psi should be the max. my cgt idles at 1500(because the engine runs so smooth at that rpm you cant tell its running,i like it)and at 35-40 psi warmed up. and pegs around 80 when warmed, 90 cold. is my valve release spring faulty? i use 10w30 oil with a wix oil filter. before i changed the oil last it would peg at 72 when warmed. had a bocsh filter on

Hmm, that is pretty high, especially if it increases as the engine warms, which shouldn't happen. It usually means the pump is having to work harder, and it definitely means there's a problem somewhere. It could be a blockage or any number of things. It's hard to say for sure. I would personally try some Seafoam in the oil (1/3 bottle), which should not only help clean anything that might be gunking it up, but also thin the oil slightly to help you rule out that it's too cold for that grade of oil in that engine.

If that doesn't make a difference you'll have to diagnose further, which isn't going to be easy. The pressure sender could be bad, you could have crap in the oil pan, the pressure relief valve could be bad, as you said... Lots of stuff, unfortunately. It would be easy to pull the pressure relief valve (probably have quite a bit of oil come out though), but other than that it's going to take some digging.

I probably wouldn't get too crazy while driving it as long as it's really high like that.

my mistake. it will idle between 35-40 psi warmed because of my high idle, when i said it pegs at 80 i meant pedal to the floor 4000+ rpms. not idle to 80 psi. i tested it last night fully warmed up doing a 3rd gear pull to 6000 rpm and the relief valve opened then. is that normal? no other signs of oil issues other then the noisy lifters. sorry for the mix up. ive used sea foam on its first oil change. it has fresh oil and a filter right now. thanks rog
