Default K2audi: you picked up the Q7 in winter, right?

If so, do you recall if there was snow on the roads in Bavaria south of Munich? After I pick up my S6 in mid-November, I'd like to drive the Alpenstrasse from near Salzberg (southeast of Munich) to Garmisch, using both the highways and the smaller roads (near Mittenwald, for example). But OEM tires on the S6 are the ContiSportContact2, not well suited for true winter conditions, so I wonder if conditions will make this drive impossible.

Default Grossglockner strasse closes end of Oct.

Not sure if that helps.

The Dutch Auto Club maps do not show a snow restriction for the Deutsche Alpenstrasse (like they do for others).

Default There will be a good chance you will see snow. You might remember last year.......

that there was a lack of snowfall in Europe and that they were canceling Ski and Snowboard events all over Europe in December. We did not see snow until mid-December when we left Nurnberg and drove down to do some skiing in Switzerland. This article was written the day we landed in Munich.

Since you will be up in elevation I would count on some snow. Maybe have Audi put winter tires on your S6 for your ED pick-up and then when the car shows up stateside sell them (if you don't need them) and get the tires you want here. I remember when we did ED with Volvo a few years back, some would do this so they could get around easily during the Scandanavian winter.

I hope this helps.<ul><li><a href="http://www.boston.com/news/world/europe/articles/2006/12/08/warm_weather_in_europe_cause_for_concern/">http://www.boston.com/news/world/europe/articles/2006/12/08/warm_weather_in_europe_cause_for_concern/</a</li></ul>
