More reasons than cost cutting
The C5 was never designed for a V8 engine configuration. The work-around solution, and it was costly, was to develop a new front end assembly and to widen the track of the vehicle. The fenders were flared to accomodate the wider track necessitated by use of the larger engine.
The C6 was designed from the very beginning to house a V8 and a V10. The C6 is also wider than the C5; therefore, separate fenders were not needed.
