1996 Audi A4 B5 1.8T saloon UK Spec. Had a fire in the door drivers (now disconnected all loom pending fitting a replacement) I replaced damaged wires in loom running alongside the drivers door. Now car starts (all ECU functions seem good) but car won`t turn off on ignition key (so I stall and then disconnect battery to stop noise coming from throttle body) and to make ignition light go off. Auto electrician said its either short in dash wiring loom or maybe diode problem with the alternator.

Before I go round to the garage and get their assistance to disconnect the wiring to the alternator I suppose I should ask "does anyone know if that alternator fault could "FEEDBACK?" and make a live feed so the engine won`t shut off with the ignition ?"

Hmm all the replies to this post seem to have disappeared.

No, that can't happen. The diodes in the alternator only serve to rectify the 3-phase AC voltage into the direct current that powers the car's electrical system. A bad diode either fouls up the smooth conversion to DC, or shorts and drains the battery when the engine is not running.

I'd start by replacing your ignition switch before anything else.
