Thermostat replacement cost?

Re: Does $2450 sound high?
I had this done this summer, covered under my 3rd party warranty company--they were billed around $900 for thermostat replacement labor and parts. Again, another mother fckin greedy audi dealer trying to rape you, UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Now if they are changing the Time Belt and pump as well, $2450 is about right.

I was quoted $1750 for timing belt, thermostat, water pump and serpintine belt replacement. The front end of the car has to be removed. Labor is not cheap. Plus, if they get a tooth wrong, they pay for the bent valves etc!
£150 does not seem correct for a D3 4.2L gasoline engine. The thermostat is easier to replace on the diesel engines.

Re: Thermostat replacement cost?
That is about right at the dealer!!!
It is not the car it is the engine. It is the 4.2 V8 engine that cost more. In order to replace the thermostat, the dealer has to pull off the bumper and swing open a the radiator. The labor that is involved in doing that, you might as well pay for the full timing belt replacement (i.e water pump, pulleys, belts, hoses, thermostat). It would not be smart to say pay 1800 to just replace one part. The dealer is actually saving you money by doing it all in one shot.
Stay away from the dealer. Find a trusted independant mechanic that knows Audis well. You will still want to get the timing belt service. May cost 1500 to 1700. Ask around on the board to find a local audi mechanic in your area.
Auto Centro is a really good place in the D.C. metro area. Family business and have been working on Audis for more than 30 years. They are better than the dealers.

It is possible to pull the thermostat and the waterpump
without removing the timing belt and in the case of the D2, without removing the front grill.
I've seen two Audi techs do it. Took them 1 hour and everything was properly done.

Well, the water pump went out on my 4.2. Might as well do the timing belt. Anything else to replace?
