Default AB resident buying in BC

Hey just wondering if anybody has any info regarding having to pay HST if I purchase an S4 in BC? Dealers have no issue selling cars here so don't offer much if any deals. My family lives in Kelowna so easily could order from Turner Audi. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Cheers, Ryan

Good question. I would expect you should only be on the hook for GST.

While I agree you should only be charged GST, I'm not sure how a dealer doing business in BC can avoid charging you HST. For example, if you went to a BC bookstore and bought a book, they would still charge you HST as there's no tax exemption that I'm aware of just because you are an Alberta resident.

Best to check with the Kelowna dealer how they would deal with your situation.

I am in the same boat. In Alberta, no go on any deals. One guy I spoke with after the test drive spent 10 minutes telling me that a car is priced what it's worth and therefore, no discounts, cause that would make everyone's audi cheaper and not as good. Didn't quite follow his logic, but what I got out of it was that they aren't willing to deal and I should be quiet and just buy at their asking price.

I did happen to know their invoice pricing and they also get their incentives. Now, I'm not for undercutting, all businesses need to make money by all means, I am happy to help them, but on the same token, if someone (read BC) is able to offer the same car for a much better price, then I need to jump on it.

Going to BC, will save around 2k. I think I'm heading there!

Does anyone know how Audicare works if you buy in BC, but live in Alberta and want to get the regular service done in Alberta?

AudiCare is an Audi Canada option and not tied to any particular dealer. The dealer will look it up in their system when you take it in for service. For a used car, you have to buy it at time of vehicle purchase. For a new vehicle, you have 12 months or 20000 km to buy it, though most dealers will include it
as part of the new car package - mine certainly did.

Just asked the same question to a BC dealer with a used car that I had my eye on. They told me that if I went to BC to pick up the car, I would pay HST but could claim it back later (through what process, I don't know) but if I got them to ship the car to Alberta, I would not have to pay HST. Seems like an odd response to me... maybe the BC government thinks that if I pay to have the car shipped to AB, they've gotten money out of me another way.

So now that HST is being revoked I hear that the luxury tax is coming back . Does anyone know if I can get that back since I live in AB and will be registering the car here?
