Default Some electronic issues

I recently picked up a 2006 W12, in very good condition with 49k mi on it. I have two electronics issues that I would like to solve. 1st one and most important one is my Navigation. My A8 '04's Navigation works flawlessly, on the W12 one, I am not receiving any satellite signal. There are no codes being thrown, and when I VCDS Navigation (37) is says my antenna is OK. 1st thing I did was to bypass the internal GPS antenna and installed a puck with the end of it stuffed up under the sun shelf in the back. This seemed to work OK (not great but OK) right up until I disconnected the battery this weekend. Once again I receive no satellite signal. So I am wondering if it is likely the Navigation DVD device itself in the back that is the problem? If so can a second hand one be installed with out the Navigation DVD going into Component Protection?

2nd issue is related to the headrest DVD players. As I understand it they are fired up in part by Control Head Rear (VCDS 27). The DVD players themselves work, I get sound and picture, but when I scan the car I cannot communicate with Module 27. I have heard rumor that this module, and the tow/trailer (module 69) cannot coexist. I have Module 69 on the install list but see no evidence of any accommodation for dragging a trailer behind my car, no electrical plug no hitch etc. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this one, and wondering if module 27 would become active if module 69 was removed from the install list.

Thanks

Navigation unit is not protected by Component Protection. You can buy new (refurbished) one, part number: 4E0-910-887-AX for about $350. Ask guys from audiusaparts.com to find that EXACT part for you.

Thanks for the reply Mishar, in your opinion does it sound reasonable that the 4E0-910-887-A is the culprit?

Default Trailer/rear video

I actually have both on my W12, but co existence is tricky and requires manual changes when switching back and forth. First, check further if you actually have the hitch; you may not have looked far enough. Only two or three of us have ever done the factory/Westfalia set up in the US on any D3 in the U.S. who have posted, so it's exceedingly rare--at least here.

To really check, get down on your knees or back and look way under the center of the bumper cover. It is so concealed with the removable tow bar portion off and the wiring plug in folded up that you can basically only see it from under the back of the car. If you have it, report back and I can describe further. You are looking for a cut out area, a fold down trailer wiring block with a large circular cover that swings up, and a large round hole that goes up into a large piece of black painted steel (where the removable tow bar is inserted). If you don't see anything still, then disable the trailer module from the CAN module selection in VAG COM/VCDS. That may not solve your issues, since the issue I saw with the W12 was actually the physical modules rather than the programming, but it seems like someone has at least been fooling with it in your set up if that trailer module was enabled.

Thanks for the reply MP, I have looked under the rear of the car and have not seen anything, but I will look one more time keeping in mind what you described and report back. Once again I appreciate it.

To be sure you should VCDS scan it.

What exactly do you see on the navigation screen? How do you know/think that it is antenna?

When I look at the Info Screen and scroll down it will provide a satellite count, mine is 0. VCDS scan shows no errors/codes.

Default FWIW, on the Nav antenna...

when I ran into a zero sat count display on my old standalone 2 DIN size 2G (CD based) Nav system I retrofit into my prior 2000 A6, it was the antenna wire that was simply loose on the back of the head unit. Thus, you might track down wherever the head unit is for this thing (integrated with the DVD drive in the trunk?) and check the physical connection, rather than thinking about first replacing either the head unit or the antenna.

Also make sure to do the basic three button reset on the MMI system to restart the whole thing just in case it's as simple as that--Audi's control alt delete equivalent. Could just be a fluke from the battery disconnect.

+1 I would first check antenna connections.

Antenna connection was the first thing I did, also the CTRL ALT DEL for MMI. So I bypassed the factory antenna run with a GPS antenna puck stuck up under the sun shelf in the back. My reception improved some, until I was doing some other work and disconnected the battery, and then I found I was seeing 0 satellites again. So I am starting to think it is the GPS/DVD Navi drive unit. Since Mishar tells me there is no Component Protection on the Navi unit, I am going to swap out the Navi unit from my '04 and see if the issue follows the drive unit or stays with the '06.
