Gas Octane

if you have a smart phone, i recommend downloading the Gas Buddy app to find the cheapest gas in your area...
to give you an idea of the money this app can save you, i did a search while typing this...it searched approx 45 gas stations in a 3 mile radius for premium (93) gas prices
the highest prices were:
texaco: 3.79
texaco: 3.69
valero: 3.67
the lowest prices were:
sam's club: 3.22
quick trip: 3.24
valero : 3.29
i never fill up w/o using this app...the prices are usually cheaper by my job...

Cheap gas is often just that.
I only run Cheveron in my cars. Many many years ago I would fill up at an Arco convenience store. I would notice after a couple tanks the car would not always start on the first try, would switch back to Cheveron and after a couple tanks it would start right up every time. I tried this several times with the same results. Ever since then I have only used Cheveron.
Around my house the cost difference in fuel grades is about 5%. As such I figured the most I would save is 5% and likely quite a bit less than that. If I was worried about saving 1 to 3 percent on gas I would buy a car that only needed regular octane.

Precisely.
I take it one step further and only use Top Tier gas.
Audi strongly recommends TTG for FSI engines.

Quik Trip is on that list of top tier gas and is usually the cheapest gas in this area, consistently beating the likes of Texaco, Shell, Exxon, and Chevron (with it's techron marketing bull-ish)by 40-60 cents per gallon...sometimes more...
just b/c it costs more, doesn't mean it's better for your engine...

Have seen the same thing and often buy from them. Great stores too...
I keep a printed copy of that list in the car for trips.
Guess I need to refresh it as I don't recall seeing BP on it before.
Snow ?
I think it's part of a continued full court press, like that ridiculous corn gas, to make our vehicles run worse and further the agenda of teensy 'fuel efficient' cars.
More and more independent stations are selling ethanol free around here.

I live in the Plains states of the US and I am anti-ethanol for some of exact reasons listed in this tread. Noticeable the over all engine performance and MPGs go down; it doesn't matter if you drive an Audi or a Toyota, ethanol is non-discriminatory.
I have also found it's getting harder-and-harder to find a gas station that don't have ethanol added to all its grades of gas (mid and premium). Which I believe to be an agenda driven move.

I hope this is true!

This is a problem in my area. Every station I visit has a sticker stating that "This product contains a minimum 10% ethanol". would love to see the TOP Tier Gases not have any ethanol.

Absofreakinglutely agreed !
Found a website that lists ethanol free stations and is apparently crowd sourced: http://pure-gas.org/
It list some of the Top Tier brands but I have my suspicions that the big companies would actually have different blends in the same cities or even parts of the state.
