it started missing a tad, like a bad spark plug or wire. it started
missing more and more and then got progressively worse over the day.
By
the end it could barely run, sputtering and then I heard the rapping in
the
motor. coolant and oil fine.

Default J - I'll ring you back on this today. When you called we had the Miata on the dyno...

...and at $100 per hour I didn't want to stop tuning.

First step would be to pull codes and check the timing belt.

Funny how people hear a noise but continue driving until the car stops - lol

Default Sounds like a set of misfires. Hoepfulyl you didnt fy it (by running it)

I would start with things like wires and coilpacks, pull the codes (there must be dozens) and start from there.

Default Nothings fried until you prove it with a compression and leakdown test, start with the basics

as the others have said. Pull codes, start digging.

Default I dont believe that woudl ever be a gradual occurance.

They either snap, very rarely jump teeth (which i supposed could do this) or just soldier on. But I'm open to learning - what are you thinking....?

Default Once 1 tooth is chewed off ...it will continue chewing teeth ...therefore>

causing the belt to loose more and more of it's TDC positioning until finally it won't start at all or .....like you say chews completely thru the belt or it snaps .....Usually these types of failures are never seen as it happens so quickly under normal driving conditions ....under load ...however, if yu are just at idle and minimal load when it starts to go ...it could take longer and you smay experience what the above person is experiencing ... infrequent ...amybe ...but not impossible.

Default Have you ever seen it?

I get the theory. And Heisenberg says there'
s a real possibility the whole belt's elsewhere anyway. But i have witnessed neither.
