Default Fuel System - 86 GT Coupe

Hi, I’m new to this forum and I have a specific question regarding the fuel system of an 86 GT Coupe. At the last warrant of fitness (WOF) test, it failed for having a fuel leak at the pump in the rear. I took it to the garage, but they were not sure what to do with it. Apparently there were 3 components: the pump, a filter, and something else in between which was the source of the leak. The mechanic wasn’t sure what this was, or if it could be safely bypassed. It’s a small leak, but enough to cause concern and fail the WOF.

Is anyone here familiar with the fuel system? Do you know what that part is, and where I could get a spare? My guess is that it might be some sort of pressure regulator, which means bypassing it would not be a good idea as it would not generate enough pressure to run efficiently.

Any help would be appreciated. It’s a car I loaned off my brother-in-law, I don’t know it very well. The age and rarity here in NZ mean that it’s difficult to get the right advice.

Thanks

That other 'thing' is the fuel accumulator. it makes the Pump quieter, helps keep pressure for restart, and apparently delays fluctuation of the pump pressure and keeps injector pressure steady. You probably could bypass it but it might do funny things and not start well. I believe alot of CIS VWs used the same thing.

Thanks Prospeeder. A new one will cost >$200, which is more than I would have liked right now! I better start digging around some more, and find out what fittings I need and what range I need the accumulator to work in.

Some more digging suggests it's probably a Bosch K or KE Jetronic accumulator, might be able to get one for around $100 so maybe not as bad as feared.

I now know far more about this than I ever really wanted to! I don't think bypassing would be a good idea, it probably helps keep the idle low as well as its other functions.

Thanks Bob! I have found a local Bosch agent, they are going to look at the car on Monday and see what they can do. Failing that, I'll look to get the part shipped from the US.

A lot of these Bosch parts never seem complicated enough to justify spending $300 or more. Like Prospeeder said, it's just a spring loaded diaphragm that evens out the pulses and fluctuations from the pump. There isn't much that can break other than the casing, which can cause leaks in your case. Check some wrecking yards before shelling out that kind of money. Even $50 for a working used one is better than nothing.
