Default if the only thing that is broken is the electrical piece...

then you're right, but if the end of the ignition cylinder that actually turns the electrical portion of the switch snaps off (which is what happened in my case and has in many others' as well) then you have to replace the entire lock cylinder and housing which is a whole other (and more expensive!) proposition. I'd rather have re-wired my ignition switch and kept my ignition lock (which is what I accomplished here) than spend a couple hundred bux on a new part. I planned on using black plastic or polished sheetmetal, but what you see there is actually a cannibalized cd jewel box cover!

To each his own.

So I have to drill the housing while it is inside the car? There is barely enough room!

Default Bentleys procedure

Bentleys has you remove the instrument cluster, the steering wheel, the steering shaft and the auto trans interlock cable (if auto). Then there is a steering lock housing mounting screw (torx T-30) under a small cap to the right of the steering column tube. Next you remove the steering column tube retaining nuts (4) and remove the steering column tube assembly. The lock assembly will come out with it. Next are some detailed instructions on drilling a small hole in a specified location to remove the lock cylinder. Air bag issues may also come into play. Good luck getting Audi to match the cylinder to your current key. Get somebody to fax you the specific instructions for your year model. I've done all that except remove the steering column tube and cylinder, and auto interlock. Not too bad a job, but any interior work is a killer on the old back.

Default Thanks to everyone who posted!!!

I finally found out how to do it by a combination of everyone's help AND my messed up Bently manual. It still took like 3 hours because the cheap parts didn't line up correctly and prevented the steering lock from working correctly.

And just for anyone who might be searching for this... In the Bently manual, the "Steering" section (48) shows how to remove the steering wheel, but it is the "Electrical System - Exterior" (94) section which has how to remove the ignition electrical switch, the steering lock housing, and the ignition lock cylinder.
