Fuel economy

Fuel economy
I have a 2000 A6 Avant Quattro wagon I purchased a month ago. I have replaced the plugs and coil pack and wires, the drive chain guides, 02 sensors, air filter, and valve cover gaskets. I have run the car with a variety of gasolines (different octane ratings), and the best fuel economy so far is around 16 mpg. I'm not looking for Prius ratings here, but this seems to be well below the listed average. I do have a check engine light on with the code indicating an issue with the cat converters, but I wouldn't expect that to have a dramatic effect on the overall fuel economy. Any ideas?

Only if the cats are becoming restricted would they effect power and mpg and your best off using 91 or better for the optimum performance hence mpg keeping in mind that the right foot is not a block of lead.
Did you mean cam chain guide?

Thanks for the info. Yes, cam chain guides, one on each bank.
