Default A6 TDI retrofit

Hi

I just purchased a 2001 A6 2.7 turbo gasoline V6(in the US)and I would really be interested in converting it to diesel.

Is this possible ? I realize this means updating the wiring, suspension and computer system. But can it be done ?

Also, where would I find a suitable engine and does anybody know where in the US I could find a mechanic to do it for me ?

I was previously driving a diesel Peugeot on biodiesel and not using any petroleum, so now I feel as though I have regressed.

Cheers

Default Re: A6 TDI retrofit

Given a sufficient ammount of money and time such a conversion should be possible.

BUT: Why don't you just import a "real" TDI (e.g. from Europe) and convert it to meet the U.S. standards (emission, etc.)?
Sounds easier to me...

Just my 2c

Is it ? I don't know. The only European Used Audi Diesel Dealer I have posed the question to didn't bother sending a reply.

Certainly, the easier of the two options is the way to go.

I would love to have information from anyone in the know, regarding either doing the retrofit, or legally importing a diesel into my 'behind the times' country.

Cheers

Default I know of one person converting a B5 Avant from V6 to 2.5tdi

You will need...

Engine, complete from oil sump to engine covers.
Exhaust & catalysts complete
Transmission, possibly rear differential
Engine bay harness, complete
ECM & TCM if automatic
Fuel tank & possibly full set of lines & pump too.
Instrument cluster
turbocharging plumbing & intercooler

The one person I know of... just bought everything and I do mean everything from a EU spec A4 that was totaled. Pallets of parts, more pieces than you want to bring home.

Default Importing = Expensive

I've got a 2.5 TDI engine coming this way from Germany with 40,000 kilometers it comes with intercooler, exhaust, and instrument cluster. there is a polish person selling complete kits for about 8,000 US on the TDI formus.

Regarding importing a diesel to the US, you must go through a registered importer and I got a quote for an A8 4.0 TDI of a cost around 10,000 dollars, and that is assuming that the car can be modified to meet US emissions. If the car hasn't been privatley imported by someone else it will get very very expensive.
