new to Audi, does anyone know how to find out what type of transmission is in a 2002 A4 1.8T AWD, is it a B6 or B5 engine?
Is it a CVT trans? The VIN reads: WAULC68E82A268716
Thanks

"Only an authorized Audi Vw dealer can access the bill of material info, which reveals what engine was used in your car and the subsequent engine code."

Just give your local Audi dealership a call and hopefully they will give you the info you need.
Good Luck

Here is a link that basically says:

The 3 letter codes for your options are on a sticker in the original owners manual or on a sticker in the spare tire well. The Engine and trans code are in larger letters then the rest.
If you post the trans code I can look it up. My guess is you have a 01V.

1) I am with naconi in that I am pretty sure the CVT did not come as a quattro. The most sure way of telling is to simplylook underneath and look for the driveshaft going to the rear wheels.
2) As far as which engine, open the hood and look just right and back of the timing belt cover. On my 02, there is a little metal tab with AEB stamped on it.
Just curious why you are asking?

thanks for the the response lyleswk, the reason I'm asking is because, i am about to change the timing belt on a friends A4. I was looking at one the tech articles someone had posted on this site and I noticed there were 2 different types of timing belt tensioners that came equipt on the A4.
I just want to make sure I order or I get the right parts the first time.
I want to order the parts using a internet company and if at all possible not buy from the dealership due to the money issue.
As far as what you told me about the stamp on the drivers side of the cylinder head, well I took the engine cover off the top yesterday and looked really well, and there is no stamp on the tap on the head.
I looked in the owners manual and I do see alot of number and letters printed out on a sticker in the book, but I do not know what to look for.
Im sure I will be fine once I get into the timing cover area but, I just want to be prepared for this job is all.
Thanks,
Jon

If you open the link below, look at the second picture and at the bottom right of the blue valve cover, you see a silver tab with AMB stamped on it. See it?

As far as correct parts, most houses will ask for the VIN number to make sure you are getting the correct tensioner and belt. I have an early 02 and order the "early" kit from ECS Tuning and had no issues.

Try this link
For your VIN it shows Automatic AWD which would mean Tiptronic and the picture they show suggests a B6 engine. CVT was only on the FWD models
You can confirm by at the front or rear seeing what the shape looks like. A Bing search of Audi/B6/B5 should show lots of pictures to help you determine what model you have - my understanding is 2002-2005.5 were B6 A4's, 1996-2001 were B5's.
