I compared 3.0T vs TDI in 4 different performance comparisons - here are results
Recently I logged both a Q5 3.0T and my TDI on the same strip of flat, straight road, in comparable temperature, etc. Every test I did 2 passes in each car to ensure results were repeatable. Here are the tests I performed and the results below. Enjoy!
1.) 0-100 in "S", ESP off (w/kickdown)
> Scenario: Fastest off the line (eg 0-60)
2.) 45-100 in "S" (w/kickdown)
> Scenario: Similar to a common B5S4 testing range. Fastest possible from that starting point. Street-racer type comparison.
3.) 60-100 in "D" (w/o kickdown)
> Scenario: Highway passing; quickest in civilized (no "S" or kickdown) manner (ie wife in car)
4.) 60-80 in "M8" (w/o kickdown)
> Scenario: Top gear comparison.
Here are the details for each...
I posted the most relevant graphs for each but there are a few others at the links in each section. Click on those and scroll down until you see populated graphs. This is a template I've used in the past and only used it this time for time/RPM/Speed data.
1.) 0-100 in "S", ESP off (w/kickdown)
> Scenario: Fastest off the line (eg 0-60)
Here we see 3.0T about 1/2 second faster than TDI,which matches specs roughly. Absolute values are a little slower, but that could be due to various factors. At least relatively, they are as expected:
I then decided to try applying some brake-torque in my TDI (I didn't try with 3.0T), and got the revs to ~2500 RPMs before letting loose. That gives a more sensational/responsive launch and results in a best-result of 6.13s 0-60 (added Green data):
and here is full 0-100mph (well 98):
I only ran the brake-torque pass out to 88mph, and somewhere around 70mph the 3.0T caught up and then surpassed. If the 3.0T had also brake-torque from the beginning, it may have been better throughout - maybe.
All data here:

and with brake torque here:

2.) 45-100 in "S" (w/kickdown)
> Scenario: Similar to a common B5S4 testing range. Fastest possible from that starting point. Street-racer type comparison.
> Note: I screwed up and didn't go into kickdown with TDI. I'll redo this test again. I confirmed last night that at 45mph in "S", flooring it w/o kickdown goes into 4th at 3000 RPMs, while with kickdown goes into 3rd at 3600 RPMs, confirming my logs are w/o kickdown.
TDI gets the jump and is quicker to about 70mph and then the 3.0T is quicker after that:
Here you can see the early acceleration jump the TDI gets:

3.) 60-100 in "D" (w/o kickdown)
> Scenario: Highway passing; quickest in civilized (no "S" or kickdown) manner (ie wife in car)
Basically even from 60-75 and then the 3.0T starts to pull away:

4.) 60-80 in "M8" (w/o kickdown)

No question, all TDI

Interesting info!
The 8 speed actually has launch control documented in the Q5 manual (or it does in mine at least).
It basically extreme torque braking and caries a warning about not doing it too often.
The procedure is pretty much common sense;
1. If you have ADS put it in dynamic, otherwise just box in S
2. ESP in off road mode
3. Brake hard
4. Mash throttle until revs settle (about 3k on mine)
5. Release brake
First time I did it I was genuinely shocked at how fast 2 tonnes can get moving!!!
I have done it with the box in M as well, and it shifts harder than S, but not sure if it makes much difference to the 0-60 time. Note that I have found going to M from S makes it shifter harder than going to M from D - I can't work out if this is just in my head yet though!
Would be interesting to see the 0-60 graph with full LC

I'll have to check my manual. If not there you need to post yours

Mark,
Could you explain for us novices how you capture the data (speed, rpms, time). Is it via the ODB port using a data capture device?
Very interesting work.

Yes, using VAG-COM, go to "Engine" then "Adv. Measure Blocks", then select items of interest and log. It saves it as a .csv file in the install/logs area, which you can then open in excel to graph, etc.

I have yet to read my manual but this was taught to me by my audi specialist when I picked it up and he was training me on all the features. Haven't done it yet but I will log some data with torque for android. I have less than 750 miles; I was going to wait until I hit 1k, but that could take another month or two. I have the 2.0T so I'd be happy with hitting the published 0-60 times.
