Default Winter tires

Are we limited to 18's for winter tires? My 07 GTI I dropped from 18 to 16? If 18 is what we have to use then they won't be cheap. I pick up my car in a few days and will need to get winter tires as there is still 5-6 more weeks of wnter.

You may go with 17” rim but you half to watch out for caliper clearance.

There are many threads discussing this concern, you should surf around this group further to find answers to your question.

I know tire racks #1 recommendation is to use 18's...buyt they are now also offering 19's for anyone wanting to move up.

I like the smaller sizes for winters also. Better grip on a slightly narrower tire. So I will most likely go with the 18's, even though my S4's summer rubber will be 19's.

I've had luck with Bridgestone and in the 18 size they are offering the LM-60 for $199 and they WS-60 for $164.

FWIW...I've used both and the WS-60 offered a significant advantage in winter weather grip on snow and ice. Although you do give up some handling.

I don't know if you would want to go much smaller than the 18's because your sidewall's would start to become taller than recommended and you would, most likely, be giving up somewhere in the safety department. (ie...handling, braking, etc).

For me...the $164 is a pretty good price and I usually don't push the vehicle as much in the winter anyway...so I can give up a little handling vs the LM-60 to achieve the much better winter driving characteristics.

I have seen some posts of people using 17's. I am planning to use 18s so I agree it will get expensive. Looking to use 225/45-18. I've seen 215/45-18 as low as $126 at tirerack but that's a smaller diameter, still. Within the acceptable 3% error. I'm hoping the car will show up late enough that I don't have to worry until the next winter season. Ordered late Nov and still not here.

I get my car on Saturday. I will probably park it when there is snow on the road. We received 4" of white powder today. My trade a TT was excellent in the snow this S4 should be much more enjoyable given the rear bias quattro. I will definately purchase winter tires for next season. I have a GTI as well that I can drive until such time the weather clears. Thanks for your imput

I see you are trading in your M45. Did you consider waiting for the new M56 AWD befored deciding on the S4?

I did consider waiting to see the new M56X (or even the M37X). But it would have been my 3rd Infiniti in a row and I'm just ready for another brand. LOVE the Infiniti's...never had a problem with any of them, just ready for some variety.

One test drive in this S4 and I was hooked. Wife said she didn't mind me getting a smaller car and I went for it. I'm pretty tall, 6' 6'' and I fit perfectly in the S4.

The new M56 looks pretty amazing though. I hear the interior is the best Infiniti has produced. And the 5.6 liter engine (derivative of the QX56 and Armada engine...I had an Armada also), I can tell you...had so much torque...it never really felt like it was working hard.

Happy to landing in the world of Audi though!
